Complete traceability yields greater value for producers, processors and consumers. It adds efficiency to the supply chain, allows for a more interactive relationship with the food we consume and can help mitigate or eliminate outbreaks of disease or contamination.
All of the sheep tracked in this demo were provided by Harry Elsinga's Brookwater Farms. Brookwater Farms is a family owned farming and breeding operation based in Prince Edward Island. Harry and Brookwater maintain tech friendly attitudes towards their animals: tagging them at birth and tracking their growth and development with the latest technology.
All of the sheep were processed by NorthumberLamb, a producer owned and operated lamb marketing co-operative located in Truro, Nova Scotia. Their products are in demand and receive high praise for their quality and consistency.
The traceability and technology for this project was provided by American Certified Brands, popularly known as BeefChain. American Certified Brands provides data provenance and integrity solutions for the agricultural industry using blockchain based technology. We were able to successfully translate our experience with cattle to sheep, and used this opportunity to improve our process flow and data points.
The production of any agricultural product is a collaborative process and adding a new dimension, such as blockchain based traceability, makes effective collaboration even more important. This was facilitated by the Canadian Sheep Federation, whose work in introducing and uniting the disparate entities that make up this model made this demo a possibility. The Canadian Sheep Federation supports sheep producers by representing their interests at the federal level as well as supporting their members efforts to grow and advance technologically.
